One Strange Rock
From the award-winning team of filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (`Black Swan') and producer Jane Root (`America the Story of Us'), this 10-part cinematic event series explores the fragility and wonder of planet Earth -- one of the most peculiar, unique places in the universe. Host Will Smith guides viewers on an unprecedented exploration, bolstered by an elite group of eight astronauts who provide unique perspectives and relate personal memoirs of the planet seen from a distance. Hourlong episodes delve into monumental events such as genesis, cosmic violence, human intelligence and alien life, oxygen, and survival vs. destruction.
In my freshman year of college I remember watching the nature documentary series “Planet Earth” in my friend’s dorm room and wondering to myself how people get to work on making these incredible films- I had a feeling of envy thinking of the filmmakers behind the incredible footage. At the time I was studying engineering and I had no idea that years later I would be working in the very industry I had been dreaming about for so many years.
“One Strange Rock” was the first major nature documentary film I worked on and it was wild to see my dream come full circle and to shoot time lapse and aerials for a film about our planet. It was also cool to see my “layer lapse” technique feature for National Geographic and it felt incredibly validating that I made the jump away from engineering into freelance filmmaking to pursue something I felt truly passionate about. This was also the first major film I got a “Director of Photography” credit on which was also pretty neat.
